Effect Control sliders

When making an effect How is it determined as to what control options are displayed from a standard gallery view?

Currently it works backwards from the last node adding sliders that you have adjusted until it goes over around 4 sliders. We are planning on a new feature that allows effect authors to decide which sliders get shown.
