I can't control the erase brush very well, any tips on how to use it properly?

I wonder if you can give us a bit more detail about what the problem is? If you just load a picture then start drawing with the erase brush, is it jerky? The erase brush is designed to work with smallish areas. It will slow down, and work less well, if you are trying to erase a very large part of your picture.

Kind regards,

Tony

I can not move the mouse and control the brush around turns and into V shaped areas. I always go into the subject area and out of the background.
I find it impossible to go around flowing hair

Are you talking about the erase tool for removing object from your picture or erasing brush strokes when selecting an area?
