plain background

I thought I posted a question last night but can't find it and so at risk of duplication, I am asking again.
I would like to get rid of background and just have a plain white or plain black background. I know how to use the eraser to go around the image and make it black but then I do NOT know how to save it and it reverts back to reg. background. I have tried numerous times to figure it out. PLEASE give me a step by step process. Thank you.

Hi Marsteton, your question is here and I just answered it 
You can search for your own post in the right top corner by clicking on the down arrow and choose for 'View your posts'
