Effects Editor

May be I am just stupid but I don't get how to use the Effects Editor. The tip is to drag to the canvas. Is the canvas the photo or the box below. When I drag to the box below I get a message to connect the output to the input. ??? Nothing happens. What is the point of this effect?

The easiest way to get to grips with the Effects Editor is to watch a few videos. Start with the first one (and don't forget to expand the video to full screen to see it easily).
