For those of you having the same problem, the issue Melissa was having was she had set the Montage Width and Montage Height to be 170 by 170, which is a 0.03 megapixel image, and hence lacking detail. To have the same detail as the original pictures, the area the pictures take up on the page should be the same number of megapixels as the original. So, for example, if you have a 2 by 2 grid of pictures, the montage canvas needs to be at least twice the width and twice the height of your original pictures, more if there's any gaps between the pictures, to contain all the detail of the originals.
