Choose a selection and this operation will un-mix the colors from the soft edges into the foreground and background. You can the manipulate the foreground and background and use a merge operator to re-composite the two parts together to get a result without a halo. Tow new selections are created with a ~ infront of them and they are the maximum extents of the foreground and background. Use these selections to do things like bluring the foreground or background. Use the original selection to merge the two results back together though otherwise the result will be poor.
