Is there a transparency effect

Is there a way to create a transparent background where white = transparent.
The idea is to create an effect as if one were to stack several overhead transparencies on top of each other creating a collage on several or many layers and save this file and the transparency to be used in another program like PScs ?? or Corel Draw or Corel Painter 12
If this is not available, of course "I" think it would be great
I've been away from the forum for a few days and things change, looks good. Wyndham

Sounds like what you are describing is the new compositing tool. It's in testing and should be available soon.
