Hi Gary,
Probably the easiest is to use the montage facility:
Go to File > New Montage
Set the width and height to the same as your picture
Choose the solid background colour and make sure Texture and Border are off
Hit OK
Add a New Overlay
Choose your picture
Use the brushes to cut back to your solid color
Let me know if you want any more information.
